What Once Was
Color pencil and Spray paint
Message of the piece:
Through this piece, I tried to show how the people around you can disappear whether completely or partially. For example, people can move, break up, pass away, forget, or just disappear.
Artist's Statement:
I was inspired by old comic books that needed 3D glasses to see so I wanted to create my own. When I tried to find an example of these books online, I came across a picture where someone painted on a wall a blue, red, and black picture. When you looked through the 3D glasses, depending on which lens you looked through, you either say a person or a skeleton. I wanted to try this so I tested many color pencils and drew lines on a piece of picture. I found a red pencil where the red line I drew would look white and blend in with the paper when I looked through the red lens. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a blue colored pencil that did the same. While experimenting, I found that the red line would look black when looking through the blue lens and vice versa so I decided to paint the background black instead so the opposite picture would disappear instead of the matching color picture. When I was drawing the people finding out how to shade was hard since the effect wouldn't work. I had to press really hard and mix different colors. It was hard at first but got better as I got the hang of it. In the end, the effect worked perfectly for the red person but didn't work as well for the blue person. When looking through the red lens, the blue person never disappeared completely since you could still see his shading.
